Physical Symptoms
Many children with fetal alcohol syndrome disorder have similar physical features. Because of growth retardation they are often shorter than their peers, have a smaller head size, low body weight, smaller eyes with drooping upper lids, flattened cheeks, a small jaw, thin upper lip and a flattened philtrum (Facts, 2015).
Behavioral Symptoms
Children and adults with fetal alcohol syndrome disorder have many behavioral problems due to the underdevelopment of their brain. There are several behavior symptoms associated with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Speech and language delays are among them. Studies have shown that within a certain age group children learn fewer words than those haven’t been exposed to FAS. Poor memory and problems with visual spatial learning, poor coordination are also symptoms of FAS. People with FAS have trouble recalling sequences or where objects were previously placed. For example, someone with FAS could walk into a store knowing what they want to buy, but can easily forget once inside. Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder ADHD has also been linked to FAS. While they are able to focus on a subject, the person affected has difficulty shifting their attention to a new subject. Due to damage in the pre-frontal cortex, the affected person has problems with impulse control and could have behavioral problems in school. They could also have vision or hearing problems and potentially heart, kidney or bone issues ("Fetal Alcohol and the Brain", 2000). Below is a short video of a boy that suffers from FAS.
